Substance Abuse
In many of our locations Providence offers services for adolescents and young adults requiring substance abuse assessment, treatment and/or relapse prevention services. The program objective is to assist individuals in identifying and understanding their alcohol and other drug problems, and motivating change. We facilitate movement through the stages of change to help teens and young adults make healthier choices in all areas of their lives.
The Seven Challenges Program® is implemented in many areas around the country. This evidence-based program is designed to help adolescents and young adult substance abusers to motivate a decision and commitment to change. It helps young people understand what it entails to give up a drug using life style and prepares them for success when they commit to such a change. The program is developmentally appropriate, research based, culturally sensitive and holistic.
Developmentally Appropriate
Young people are assisted in mastering developmental tasks to define their own identity, to learn systematic logical thinking and prepare for adult roles. The Seven Challenges addresses the drug use behavior and the underlying causes, including co-occurring psychological problems and life skill deficits.
Research Based
This Program is based on the latest research and evaluation literature, in particular the findings about (1) the underlying psychological problems that typically accompany drug abuse; (2) the stages of change in overcoming drug problems; (3) preparing individuals for change though motivational interviewing; and (4) resiliency.
Outcomes
The Seven Challenges Program has been shown to be effective in treating both substance abuse and co-occurring problems in studies sponsored by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, conducted by The University of Iowa and the University of Arizona, and published in refereed professional journals.
Service Components
The Seven Challenges has been implemented in a wide array of treatment settings (in-home, outpatient, intensive outpatient and day treatment), public and private schools, and public and private correctional facilities.
